Biography; Or the terribly exciting tale of Jacob Watley, Englishmen in New York With perhaps a drop of Scotch while he's keeping on the watch, Only stopping here and there to catch a flea. |

It was nearly thirty eight years ago that Jacob Watley came into being, and he will be the first to tell you that the first eighteen years of it were rather privileged, if not all out posh. Coming from a well off family, his father a doctor and his mother a daughter of a doctor, the Watley name was associated with wealth and propriety. Jacob's two elder sisters withheld this reputation, marrying a politician and a dentist respectively. He can remember when they used to be fun, before they got married. Then Jacob only saw his sisters on holidays, and that was when they weren't at their husband's family home. His parents weren't happily married, and all of this added up to a general fear of marriage that Jacob still holds to this day. But we get ahead of ourselves. Jacob attended boarding school at Eton, and his parents assumed he would go on to Oxford or Cambridge, one of those upstanding (British) schools. However, when they realized he had spent his time applying to schools in America, rather than to their choices for him, they were alarmed and outraged. Luckily, he not only applied for the schools, however, but also the scholarships. He was accepted at Columbia University, one of his top choices, with full scholarship. See, while his parents were planning his life, they had regretfully left Jacob's desires out of their thought process, and that made the boy bitter. So bitter, in fact, he wanted to put an ocean between himself and his distant family, his sisters (both elder and younger, as he now had a younger sister as well) included. He had no interest in being in a family who didn't pay attention to who he was but rather just what they wanted him to do, thank you. So, he hopped the pond and headed to New York City, declaring his major upon arriving as English and Comparative Literature, with Political Science as a minor (he always did adore tales of Dictators). He flirted, danced, and drank his way through the evenings of those years, though he managed still to get good grades, knowing his staying in school depended upon it. He slept around, dated casually, and lived the life he had thought would be beyond him due to his stifling family and stuffy home back in London. But, of course, it wasn't all fun and games. He was beaten due to sleeping with a rather muscular man's girlfriend. He was chased from several dorm rooms by frustrated floor monitors and jealous room mates he had only bedded the night before. He was slapped by who knows how many women, frankly, and he slept with not a few young men when off his tits drunk (and a few of them slapped him, too). But the worst of his mistakes, made the summer after his graduation from his undergraduate degree--he had applied to law school, of all things, and got accepted, surprisingly--was sleeping with Rebecca Dowd. She was a gorgeous woman, just his type, and they met while dancing at a club, drinking, grinding, and getting on famously. One thing lead to the other, and they were in her bed in Chelsea, having not such a bad time of it. No, the bad times came when, a month later, he was called by Becca to learn she was pregnant. He was shocked, horrified, and hung over from the night previous, so he had no idea what to say. She told him it didn't matter; she was getting it terminated. Dazed, Jacob went in to his law degree with little social life at all. He went to class, did his work, read his readings, and didn't do much else. A child. He might have had one. The thought haunted him, and it wasn't until half way through his law degree that he snapped out of it. Two years, and he recovered, though a different man. Once candid about his affairs, his conquests, etc., Jacob was a bit more reserved. Lies were told about what he did the night previous, not boasts, and his past relations were made into myths and nothing more. He didn't mention Becca to anyone. Ever. It was at law school he met Ian Rush, a man who was the opposite of Jacob in most ways. He was responsible, he was slightly paranoid, and he was an introvert. At least, in comparison to Jacob he was, and that was all very refreshing. There was a part of Jacob that admired Ian ( And still does), and that lead him to befriend the man, even if it seemed strange at first. Jacob made it work, because, even though all appearances made it seem like he was the one to envy--outgoing, charming, and a golden boy, for all intents and purposes--Ian was the one Jacob looked up to. Getting his degree, Jacob went on to work with a law firm in the city, working his way up through it over the years to get himself settled in the role of a prosecuting attorney with the company. He has lived in Manhattan for a good deal of time, but a recent promotion (and pay raise) has lead him to wish for a big house with a yard, somewhere to putter about in his old age (as he fondly puts it). He turned to Tarrytown, a whimsically named place which was cleverly also near Ian's place, something that added to the value of the property ten fold. He has recently moved in, though is still living in boxes, the only thing unpacked being his immense wardrobe. |

Jacob Watley is a good drinking mate. He's fun, funny, quick-witted, charming, and always ready with a good story about this, that, or the other thing. He's a good shopping mate. He is a bit of a fashionista, metrosexual to the core and certainly not afraid to embrace expensive labels in the fear of losing his masculinity. He's a good best mate. He's loyal, compassionate, and ready to cheer a fellow up if he's in need. He's a good date. He is attentive, romantic, and chivalrous, and does his best to make sure the other person is happy. He is a good lawyer. He can lie without flinching, condemn a man without guilt, and work a jury like nobodies business. He can be a good man. If he tries.
If he doesn't, Jacob is a brat. He can be cold, bitchy, and completely hurtful when cornered, and he doesn't know exactly where that stems from--he's willing to blame his mother, though. He lies with magnificent ease, as mentioned, and usually does when it comes to personal questions. Jacob has a good deal of regret in his youthful years, and doesn't like dwelling on it, nor does he want others even knowing about it, so he'll skim over any questions about his youth to tell rambling, dull stories about his favourite stories as a child, or what he used to love doing on his summer break. His family treat him like a spoiled brat, and he treats them like distant relatives he never speaks of unless in passing, and only when it comes to his childhood. He is the black sheep, and both he and his family know that. He has a deep desire to be adored by everyone he meets, and will flatter, charm, and do whatever he can to get that; he can have a family who hates him as long as the rest of the world thinks he is fantastic.
